Feedback - Second Reading

The second reading of the play on the 20th April was a really valuable part of the production process as it allowed me to hear the changes I  had made to the script.  It's fair to say that there were some quite major edits made to Draft 2, including a change of location for the final scene, re-arrangement of scenes in Act 1, and as many as 14 pages of dialogue removed.  The test, of course, was whether these changes had indeed improved the play...or if I'd inadvertently done some damage to it!

There was a good feedback discussion about the play after we had finished reading, and I have attempted to highlight the points raised (without including anything that could be a consider a "spoiler"!).  I have paraphrased people's general comments from the post-reading discussion:

  • The use of dramatic devices works well to communicate the ideas in the play

  • The play, although discussing a very serious topic, doesn't have a "lecturing" feel to it

  • The location of the play might need to be made a little clearer, setting it in a small town as opposed to a larger city.  That would make it more believable in terms of location and the way in which the Detective works.

  • The dialogue feels natural and communicates ideas well

  • The rank of the Detective might need to be addressed - it would make more sense if she was a Detective Sergeant (DS) than a DC given many of the factors in the play

  • Plot twists are working much better in Draft 3 (can't be detailed here!)

  • A change in the explanation of Steven's absence from the story might need addressing.  He is now at university (he was living with his grandparents) - does this still work for the story?

  • The pace of the play has improved greatly, and speeds up appropriately towards the end of the play

  • The opening of the play now works a lot better

  • The new location and reworking of the final scene is a big improvement
